GALLERIES ALPINE Alpine is the biggest town in the Big Bend. With a population of about 6,000 and lots of shops, restaurants, lodging and activities, it has a down-home feel. This is the heart of the last frontier. Cowboys still make a living here and the Western ethos inspires local art and culture, from hand-hammered jewelry to decorative wrought iron finishes made by real blacksmiths. Local watering holes have an old west feel, from the Ritchey Wine Saloon and Beer Garden – a revived hangout straight from the early train days that founded the town, to the Ole Crystal Bar, with its cowboy murals, cowboy customers, and cowboy lore. The downtown district hosts a growing gallery of outdoor murals in the alleyway between 5th and 6th Streets. Art is found indoors and outdoors from the beautiful grounds of Kokernot Municipal Park to the dozen-plus galleries and studios throughout town. Visit the Museum of the Big Bend on Sul Ross State University campus to learn about the history, culture and layout of the entire Big Bend region. From May through July, cheer the Alpine Cowboys professional baseball team at historic Kokernot Field. Annual events include the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering (February), Trappings of Texas (April), Viva Big Bend Music Festival (July), Big Bend Ranch Rodeo (August), Artwalk (November), and Christmas Parade (December). Plus, the Downtown Association hosts several Heart of Alpine events each year. Alpine is home to a unique blend of cultures, talents and energies that create a place where everyone feels at ease. Relax. Recharge. Enjoy. For information about events, restaurants and lodging, go to VisitAlpineTX.com.
