Fort Davis ( pop . 1,099 )

“ Blue Angus ,” 8x10 ” oil , by Ricardo Robles
Fort Davis sits the highest of them all , perched at the foot of the Davis Mountains at 4,892 feet elevation . It was the perfect spot for the military fort it once supported , which is now open to the public as Fort Davis National Historic Site . The town ’ s art scene is influenced by the great outdoors which can be enjoyed on the scenic loop that circles the Davis Mountains from one side of town to the other . This loop links several points of interest , including Davis Mountains State Park , the McDonald Observatory , and the Davis Mountains Preserve all the way around to Chateau Wright , a vineyard and winery showcasing wine made from locally produced grapes . One of several art galleries , the Old Spanish Trail Gallery and Museum , available by appointment , features fine western art as well as art workshops .
